Microsoft Windows Networking Essentials: A Hands-on Approach to Networking



Windows Server Essentials uses a security certificate to help secure the information that is exchanged between the software and a web browser. When you install the Connector software on your computers, the security certificate for Windows Server Essentials is added to the trusted certificate list on your computers. The best way for users to access Remote Web Access when they are away from your office is to use a portable computer that has the Connector software installed on it.

All interactive, network, dial-up, and authenticated users are members of the Everyone group. This special identity group gives wide access to system resources. When a user logs on to the network, the user is automatically added to the Everyone group. Membership is controlled by the operating system.


Any user who is logged on to the local system has the Interactive identity. This identity allows only local users to access a resource. When a user accesses a specific resource on the computer to which they're currently logged on, the user is automatically added to the Interactive group. Membership is controlled by the operating system.


This group implicitly includes all users who are logged on through a network connection. Any user who accesses the system through a network has the Network identity. This identity allows only remote users to access a resource. When a user accesses a specific resource over the network, the user is automatically added to the Network group. Membership is controlled by the operating system.


The permissions that are displayed in the folder properties represent only the users that are managed by the Dashboard. They do not include user permissions such as groups or service accounts, or include any permission that may be set on the folder by using other native tools, or include users that were not added through the Dashboard.


Find my device. The Find my device feature allows an administrator of a Windows device to find the location of that device from account.microsoft.com/devices. To enable Find my device, an administrator needs to be signed in with a Microsoft account and have the location setting enabled. This feature will work even if other users have denied access to location for all their apps. Security groups are listed in Discretionary Access Control Lists (DACLs) that define permissions on resources and objects. When administrators assign permissions for resources like file shares or printers, they should assign those permissions to a security group instead of to individual users. The permissions are assigned once to the group instead of multiple times to each individual user.
